Major Paleoindian Burial Sites with Red Ocher
- Anzick Site, Montana (~12,600 BP) — the only known Clovis burial in North America; the Anzick-1 child and 100+ Clovis artifacts were heavily coated in red ocher (Waters & Stafford 2007; Rasmussen et al. 2014).
- Horn Shelter No. 2, Texas (~11,200 BP) — double burial of an adult and child with ocher-stained grave goods (Redder 1985; Young 1988).
- Buhl Burial, Idaho (~10,675 BP) — one of the oldest, most complete Paleoindian skeletons, associated with red ocher (Green et al. 1998).

Ocher Mines Are Extraordinarily Rare
Documented Paleoindian ocher procurement sites — actual mines — are exceptionally rare. The Powars II site in Wyoming is the best-known Paleoindian red-ocher quarry in the Americas. The original field research presented on this site documents evidence of a comparable red-ocher mine at Ocher Mountain in upstate New York, set within a ceremonial landscape and memorialized in portable art.
The New York Question
Given the overwhelming continental evidence, why is red ocher virtually absent from New York State's Paleoindian research? Dr. Jonathan Lothrop, Curator of Archaeology at the New York State Museum and the state's self-positioned expert on Paleoindian "lifeways," shows a conspicuous absence of engagement with ocher in his published work — while the discovery of an actual New York ocher mine has been dismissed without field examination. One cannot credibly claim expertise in Paleoindian lifeways while ignoring the culture's most important ceremonial substance.
